Built of iron in 1907, this steam powered freighter measured 384 feet long by 50 feet wide. The Pelanion was heading to Baltimore from West Africa with a cargo of iron ore when she attempted to pull into Bermuda to refuel. On January 16,1939, captain Janis Valikos miscalculated his postion as he tried to enter the port of St. Georges and ended up striking the reefs off of what is now Bermuda International Airport. He was not helped by the fact that St. David's Lighthouse was off due to the wartime blackout.
The ship' stern is in about 60 feet of water, but the bow and midsection lay in 10-30 feet of water, perfect for snorkellers. The steam engine is intact an towers up out of the wreck. Also intact are the boilers which fed steam to the engines. The wreck is nestled amongst thriving coral reefs that break the surface of the water and the site teems with fish.
