The Darlington was a steel hulled steamship built in 1881. She was 285 feet long and 36 feet wide. On February 26,1886, while on her way from New Orleans to Germany, Captain Richard Ward neglected to post a lookout even though he was passing Bermuda, which by then, was known to be a treacherous area for shipping. The Darlington hit the reef off the western end of Bermuda and sunk, taking with her a load raw cotton and several thousand bushels of grain. The ship nowadays has mostly collapsed on itself due to the 120+ plus years of being pounded by waves on our barrier reef. She now sits in 15-20 feet of crystal clear water.
